28 MILLION THANKS

Action Against Hunger is a neutral, independent, international humanitarian organisation that fights against the causes and effects of hunger. It saves the lives of malnourished children. It guarantees families access to safe water, food, basic health care and education. It supports refugees in their most basic needs. In Spain it facilitates access to employment for people in vulnerable situations as a tool to escape marginalisation and food insecurity.

Thanks to initiatives such as the Race Against Hunger, last year we supported more than 22 million people in 58 countries through our activities.

NEWS

Javier Colegio Los Robles
"We have a map of the world drawn in the playground and the students add up the distance travelled during the warm-up in PE class. Every 1,000 km we make a refreshment stop. Each class carries out a study of the country where we stop to learn about the monuments, the language, the music, the traditions, the religion... This means that other subjects such as Language, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences are covered with a cross-curricular approach. And so on until we reach our destination. We have seen some impressive work, such as a 5th grade Primary student who has made a book of the whole journey."

Javier Cantero, primary school coordinator and Physical Education teacher at Los Robles School (Madrid).
Patricia Luengo Ramón y Cajal
"The families are very involved, and seeing that it is a serious project done year after year with the same organisation, the fundraising is increasing. Helping more people every year becomes a motivation. In our school, 1,600 students run every year. Even the little ones crawl on the grass we have inside the school."

Patricia Luengo, Head of Quality and Environmental Management at the Ramón y Cajal School (Madrid).
Jessica Colegio Britanico Zaragoza
"It is very important that the subject of Physical Education is able to lead a project where we involve the rest of the teachers of other subjects, all the students and their families."

Jessica Rodríguez, Physical Education teacher at the British School of Aragón (Zaragoza).
Esther CEIP San Benito
"The students are really struck not only by the sporting activity but also the fact that this sporting event is going to benefit thousands of children in vulnerable situations. As teachers, we really like students to get involved in this kind of activity."

Esther Abadía, principal of San Benito infant and primary school (Madrid).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For 27 years we have been bringing the issue of hunger to the classroom through the Race Against Hunger project. We do this by raising awareness among students and encouraging them to participate in a charity race, through which they raise funds to fight child malnutrition. This is an international movement that has already been joined by more than half a million students around the world.

The Race Against Hunger is organised in three stages:

  1. Initially, the school receives teaching material tailored to the different stages to work on in the classroom. Through this approach, values such as empathy and solidarity are promoted, helping to build responsible citizenship.
  2. At the end of the awareness-raising stage, the pupils become spokespersons for what they have learnt, and they turn their attention to the search for sponsors who commit to giving them a donation for each kilometre or lap they run on the day of the race, which each school organises according to its needs.
  3. During the days following the race, the school collects the funds raised thanks to the motivation and effort of the students and gives them to Action Against Hunger.

All participating schools receive the following materials:

  • Videos and educational suggestions tailored to the different educational stages.
  • Communication support materials.
  • Posters to be put up at the school.
  • A bib for each student.
  • A passport for each student.
  • Tape to mark off the course of the race.
  • A diploma of appreciation.

You can choose the date that best fits your schedule.

Action Against Hunger offers some ideas:

  • 16 October: World Food Day.
  • 20 November: World Children's Day.
  • 30 January: School Non-Violence and Peace Day.
  • 22 March. World Water Day.

And of course, the International Race Against Hunger, which in 2025 will be held on 23 May.

Each school can set up a different route according to its needs or the space available. The kilometres can also be symbolic and adapted to different ages, so that a lap around the playground, even if it is not very long, can be counted as a full kilometre.

It is also possible to hold the race outside the school. In this case, you will need to request the appropriate permits from the relevant Town Hall or Municipal Council.

The pupils become awareness-raising agents, sharing what they have learnt in the classroom and mobilising the people around them to commit to giving them a donation per lap or kilometre run on the day of the race. They have a passport in which they must record these commitments in order to be able to collect the money.

At Action Against Hunger we promote the sponsorship system to encourage student participation and motivation. This allows them to see how their efforts translate directly into aid.

There is no minimum or maximum amount. Each person undertakes to hand over the amount they wish per lap or kilometre travelled, from 1 euro to 20 euros, for example.

Yes, a company can sponsor the event in general, make an additional donation, or even sponsor a student as an individual. However, the tax deduction rate is different for companies.

In addition to the sponsorship system, schools can launch a digital crowdfunding challenge supported by Action Against Hunger to engage more people. You can also organise a charity jumble sale or other activities. All ideas are welcome!

There is no deadline, although we recommended doing so during the month after the race.

You can make a deposit at a branch or make a bank transfer to one of the following accounts:

  • Banco Santander: ES53 0049 1892 65 2013303091
  • Caixabank: ES82 2100 5518 7422 0002 3731

The name of the school and the town need to appear in the description field so that Action Against Hunger can identify it.
